NASA APOD · StarryScapes
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Horsehead Nebula is a dark indentation against a red emission nebula in Orion. It is one of the most famous nebulae in the sky. The horse-head shape is a cloud of opaque dust that blocks the light from the bright red emission nebula behind it. The bright star to the left is part of Orion's belt.
