Shadow Cone of a Total Solar Eclipse

NASA APOD · Olivier Staiger (High Moon)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sometimes during a total solar eclipse, a strange shadow of darkness stretches into the distance. These shadow cones are visible because Earth's atmosphere is not completely transparent, scattering sunlight. This one was caught during an eclipse near the horizon, creating a long corridor of sun-blocked air.
