X-Rays from the Galactic Core

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Chandra X-ray Observatory took this long look at the core of our Milky Way galaxy, 26,000 light-years away. The false-color view spans 130 light-years, showing an energetic region rich in x-ray sources. The central source is Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole three million times the mass of the Sun. Despite its mass, it is surprisingly faint in x-rays.
