Inside Newton Basin on Mars, numerous narrow channels run from the top down to the floor. This picture covers a region about 1500 meters across. These gullies were found in high-resolution pictures from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. Similar channels on Earth are formed by flowing water, but on Mars, temperatures are too cold and the atmosphere too thin for sustained liquid water.
