Universe Age from Microwave Background

This sky map shows the universe is 13.7 billion years old. It combines the microwave glow of gas from our Milky Way galaxy, in red, and a spotty pattern of microwaves from the early universe, in gray. This cosmic microwave background is light that came directly to us when the expanding universe cooled enough for atoms to form. A close inspection of the spots reveals a slightly preferred scale.
