COSMIC MESSAGE

Spirit, one of NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers, landed in Gusev Crater in 2004. This image shows its camera calibration target, which also served as a sundial. The sundial helped students determine the local solar time on Mars, using the shadow cast by the gnomon. The target also bore the legend, "Two Worlds, One Sun."
