Light Echoes from V838 Mon

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

In January 2002, star V838 Mon suddenly expanded, becoming the brightest star in the Milky Way Galaxy. Then, just as suddenly, it faded. This stellar flash was unlike any seen before, as supernovas and novas expel matter into space. This Hubble Space Telescope image shows light echoes, where light from the outburst illuminates surrounding dust, rather than expelled material.
