Polar Ring Galaxy NGC 2685

NASA APOD · Ken Crawford (Rancho Del Sol Observatory)
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 2685 is a rare polar-ring galaxy, where a ring of stars, gas, and dust orbits perpendicular to the main galactic disk. This unusual structure might be the result of a smaller galaxy being captured by a larger one, with its debris stretched into a rotating ring. Despite its bizarre appearance, the ring structure in NGC 2685 appears to be remarkably old and stable.
