M2-9, a planetary nebula, is about 2,100 light-years away and spans over a light-year. Known as a twin jet or butterfly nebula, it has striking bipolar symmetry. Ground-based telescopes have monitored its dramatic west-to-east progression of features over many years, as shown in this collage.
