Layers of Red Cliffs on Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

These red cliffs on Mars are part of Chasma Boreale, a large division in the northern ice cap. The formation is unlike anything seen on Earth. Several dusty layers lead into this deep chasm, with cliff faces appearing dramatically red. The lighter areas in the image are likely water ice, and the elevation drops significantly into the chasm.
