The grooved, flat, and shallow floors of several craters in Mars' Hellas Basin puzzled scientists. New radar images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter suggest a compelling hypothesis: huge glaciers of buried ice. These glaciers, larger than a city and up to a kilometer deep, are protected from evaporation by a layer of dirt.
