An Etruscan Vase Moon Rising

NASA APOD · John Stetson
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sometimes, the Moon looks distorted as it rises, an effect caused by light bending through Earth's atmosphere. This image captures February's full moon appearing strangely pinched near the horizon. Pioneering science fiction writer Jules Verne called this phenomenon the "Etruscan vase" for its shape.
