A Solar Prominence from SOHO
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
A fiery prominence erupts from the Sun, captured by the SOHO observatory's EIT experiment in 1999. This image shows hot plasma, made of ionized helium, escaping into space. The gas is usually trapped by the Sun's magnetic fields, forming huge looping structures above the surface.
