Perihelion and Aphelion

NASA APOD · Enrique Luque Cervigón
COSMIC MESSAGE

Aphelion, when Earth is farthest from the Sun in its elliptical orbit, occurs tomorrow, July 4th. This does not affect our seasons, which are determined by Earth's axial tilt. July is still winter in the southern hemisphere and summer in the northern. However, it does mean the Sun will appear at its smallest size on July 4th. This composite compares two pictures of the Sun, showing its apparent size at different points in our orbit.
