Light Echoes from V838 Mon
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
In 2002, a star in Monoceros, V838 Mon, suddenly expanded and became the brightest star in the Milky Way. Then it faded just as quickly. This flash was unlike any supernova or nova ever seen. The Hubble Space Telescope captured these light echoes, which show light from the outburst reflecting off surrounding dust shells.
