COSMIC MESSAGE

The Andromeda Galaxy, M31, is the closest large spiral galaxy to our own, about two and a half million light-years away. You can see it with your unaided eye in the constellation Andromeda, a faint smudge in the sky. This image, taken with a telescope, shows its bright yellow nucleus and dark lanes of dust. It also captures the reddish glow of hydrogen atoms, indicating regions of star formation.
