Comet 45P Passes Near the Earth

COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdušáková, or 45P, recently made a close pass by Earth. This icy snowball developed a thin ion tail and a faint, expansive green coma, whose color comes from energized carbon molecules. The comet became just bright enough to be seen with the unaided eye when it was closest to the Sun in December.
