The Large Cloud of Magellan

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Large Magellanic Cloud is a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way. It's about 160,000 light-years distant in the constellation Dorado. This image captures the cloud's structure, which is easily visible to observers in the Southern Hemisphere. Ferdinand Magellan's crew studied these two fuzzy objects during their circumnavigation of Earth, giving them their name.
