This is the first image ever taken of Earth from the Moon, captured in 1966 by Lunar Orbiter 1. It was taken about two years before the Apollo 8 crew's more famous color photo. Modern technology allowed the recovery of higher resolution images from the original data tapes. This recovery project began 20 years ago.
